SHARAKU
Sharaku is another renowned Ukiyo-e artist who specialized in actor portraits. He, too, was recognised for his talent by Tsutaya Shigesaburo.
I wonder if his godfather was the publisher Tsutaya Shigesaburo. His name sounds one genius who awfuly quickly, fearlessly creates masterpieces. I also researched his full name, Toshusai Sharaku, which sounds quite fascinating.
Shigesaburo Tsutaya discovered Sharaku's talent and published 145 works in just 10 months. After gaining great popularity, Sharaku disappeared without a trace. Due to his godlike presence, people speculated that Sharaku must be Hokusai, but it has been recently confirmed that he was actually Jurobei Saito, a Noh actor in the service of the Tokushima clan. In the Heisei era, it was discovered by digging deeper into documents from the Edo period. (Wikipedia)
The surname "Toshusai" means "the land where theasu was located to the east of Edo," implying the Hacchobori or Tsukiji area. Both Tsutaya and the playhouses of the actors Sharaku portrayed were located in Hacchobori, and this surname was one of the keys to solving the question, "Who was Sharaku? Incidentally, although he served the Tokushima clan, Jubei himself lived in Edo.
Life: 1763-1820, age at death 57,
At the age of 31, Jurobei published his works for one year at the strong invitation of Tsutaya Shigesaburo, but as a "samurai," the highest rank in the samurai-farmer-artisan-consumer system in Edo period, Jurobei was too much of a critic to live as a Ukiyo-e artist of the "craftsman" class. He left the Ukiyo-e world after a year when the sales of his works declined. (Reference [1] "Ukiyo-e Hosomi" by Shugo Asano, Kodansha Sensho Metier, first published August 9, 2017)
He is graceful. He is indeed a samurai.
In 1995, a movie was made about his life.
